Differences between countries are barely evident these days. Everyone in the world is wearing the some brands and watching the same TV channels and movies. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
ADVANTAGES:
- Nowadays/Presently/In this day and age > better/improved/superior communication > people understand/grasp/comprehend other cultures much better > more open in their outlook/perspective/viewpoint of life.
- More business and cultural contacts > different nations/countries/parts of the world.
- Eg. Multinational/international/global companies > opened in different parts of the world > providing job opportunities.
- Trade is efficient/effective > improving economies of developing nations.
- People have more opportunity to travel > experience other cultures.
DISADVANTAGES:
- Many people consider this negative/unfavorable/damaging.
- Eating same food, watching same TV programmes, listening to the same music, wearing same clothes > national identities are being lost.
- Eg. McDonald’s, Starbucks, Nike, Levi’s > can be seen in all corners of the world.
- Speaking one language > damages local/native language > English, for example,> predominant/preponderant >, in fact,> it has become lingua franca of today’s world.
PERSONAL OPINION:
- I feel > cultural identity is based on far more than just films, clothes, food, etc.
- Example > India > Indians may wear any clothes > never call elders by name > give them respect > in contrast > western culture > acceptable to be called by name
- After knowing other cultures > we know own culture more
- Deep-rooted national identities cannot be damaged.
